New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday authorized its president JP Nadda and Union minister Rajnath Singh to hold consultations on the president's election with various political parties, including those in opposition, in what is seen as an outreach by the ruling party to reach a consensus on the candidate for the top constitutional post.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said in a statement that the two senior leaders will meet with members of the ruling NDA and opposition UPA, as well as other political parties and independents.

The consultations will begin soon, according to the party.

During the 2017 presidential elections, opposition parties accused the BJP of reaching out to them at the last minute after it had already decided on Ram Nath Kovind, who went on to win the president.

By endorsing Meira Kumar, the opposition provoked a contest, which Kovind won.
The presidential election will take place on July 18th.
