Arjun Ram Meghwal took Kiren Rijiju's seat in the law ministry after Rijiju left

On Thursday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was appointed to the Ministry of Earth Sciences instead of the Law Ministry. Arjun Ram Meghwal, a minister who formerly served as the minister of state for parliamentary affairs and culture, has taken Rijiju's seat.

In addition to his current portfolios, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State, will be given the independent charge of Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in place of Shri Kiren Rijiju, according to a press release from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Earlier, some Opposition leaders criticised Rijiju for "talking like a criminal" and "propagating injustice" when he said that "certain retired judges" were "part of the anti-India gang."

Rijiju had "suggested" in a letter to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud from January that a government candidate be considered in the selection of judges. This occurred when the Supreme Court and the Centre were at odds over the delay in appointing judges.

In July 2021, Rijiju assumed control of the law ministry. Rijiju, an Arunachal Pradesh native and three-term member of the Lok Sabha, earned a law degree from Delhi University's Campus Law Center. Many in the government were surprised by his appointment to a Cabinet rank from his previous position as a junior minister with Independent responsibility for Youth Affairs and Sports.
