Cash, Cigarettes, and Chaos: 'Suspected Smugglers' Make a Dramatic Escape from Lucknow Airport

Lucknow: Thirty individuals who were being held at the Lucknow airport on suspicion of smuggling gold into the nation managed to flee after feigning illness in an attempt to cause disturbances, according to authorities.  In an effort to find the guilty, customs and police authorities say they had started a search operation.  36 passengers from Sharjah were stopped by representatives of the Customs Department and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Monday at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport in this city, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashank Singh.  Some of them had cash worth ₹ 23.90 lakh and cigarettes worth over ₹ 3 crore taken from them when the officers frisked them, according to Singh.  He added that six of the travellers admitted to the authorities that they were carrying gold.  During the questioning of the remaining thirty passengers on Tuesday, one of them made up an illness to cause trouble. According to the officer, they all took advantage of this and ran away.  He stated that an attempt is being made to apprehend the accused and that a case has been filed under pertinent portions of the complaint in the case.  He said, "A case has been filed under pertinent sections on the complaint in the matter, and efforts are being made to apprehend the accused."
