Basavaraj Bommai, a three-time MLA and former minister, was sworn in as Karnataka’s 30th Chief Minister on July 28.

In the presence of top Bharatiya Janata Party officials, including former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and BJP Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh were sworn in by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.

He took the oath in the name of God to the delight of his supporters, who shouted Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

As he took the oath of office, a large crowd of his supporters, many from his seat of Shiggaon in Haveri district, gathered outside Raj Bhavan to cheer him on. Shiggaon is around 365 kilometers from Bengaluru and is part of the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency.

At the BJP legislative party session in Bengaluru on July 27, he was nominated to succeed B.S. Yediyurappa, the son of former chief minister and Janata parivar leader S.R. Bommai.

Mr. Bommai had already arrived at the site with his family, which included his wife Channamma and children, Bharat and Aditi.

Ministers from the outgoing council and lawmakers hoping to join the incoming government were among those in attendance in large numbers.
