Prices for petrol and diesel on 3 August: On Thursday, 3 August, prices for petrol and diesel remained unchanged in significant cities including New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. Around six in the morning on the day in question, the daily petrol and diesel rates—new or constant—are revealed. However, because of value-added tax (VAT), freight costs, local taxes, etc., these differ from state to state.

In Maharashtra, the cost of petrol has increased by 35 paise and the cost of diesel by 33 paise today. Punjab now charges 32 paise more for petrol and 30 paise more for diesel. In Telangana, petrol costs Rs. 1.55 and diesel Rs. 1.45. In Rajasthan, however, the cost of fuel and diesel has decreased by 14 and 12 respectively. In West Bengal, the cost of petrol and diesel has slightly decreased.

At the moment, a litre of petrol costs Rs 96.72 in Delhi, while a litre of diesel costs Rs 89.62. While in Mumbai, a litre of petrol costs Rs 106.31 and a litre of diesel costs Rs 94.27. Diesel costs Rs 92.76 and petrol Rs 106.03 per litre in Kolkata, respectively. On the other side, in Chennai, petrol costs Rs 102.63 and diesel Rs 94.24 a litre.

Prices for petrol and diesel are set in India by oil marketing companies (OMCs) such Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. Rates are set daily, according to the global price of crude oil, and this is done on an ongoing basis.

Why do petrol prices differ between states?
At six in the morning on each day, the rates—new or unchanged—are declared. However, these differ from one state to the next due to factors like Value Added Tax (VAT), freight costs, local taxes, etc.
