Security Coverage for Sourav Ganguly Raised to 'Z' Category

Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and the former president of the BCCI, would now get Z category security protection, according to a senior official in Kolkata.
The choice was made on Tuesday after Mr. Ganguly's tenure of Y category security came to an end.

"A review was done in accordance with protocol as the VVIP's security cover expired, and it was determined to upgrade Ganguly's security cordon to Z category," he stated.

The former cricketer will be protected by 8 to 10 police officers under the new security plan, the spokesman added.

Mr. Ganguly used to have a cordon of three Special Branch police officers and an equivalent number of officers guarding his Behala home under the Y category security protection.

He stated that on Tuesday, officials of the state secretariat met with authorities from the nearby police station and the Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar at Mr. Ganguly's Behala office.

"On May 21, Mr. Ganguly, who is now on the road with his club, the Delhi Daredevils, will return to Kolkata. On that day, he would begin receiving security under category Z "explained the officer.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, C V Ananda Bose, the national secretary of the Trinamool Party, Abhishek Banerjee, and others are given Z Plus protection, whereas ministers like Firhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak are given Z category security.
