Jasprit Bumrah Breaks New India Wickets Record In England
Jasprit Bumrah, India's stand-in skipper, has established a new record for the most wickets taken by an Indian bowler during a Test series in England. His 3-68 in the fifth Test at Edgbaston, which featured all three of England's top three, gave him 21 wickets in a five-match series that began last year.
That broke Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 2014 record of 19 wickets in a five-match series.
And Bumrah, who will captain India in place of Rohit Sharma, should be able to add to his total during England's second innings in Birmingham.
Despite India's long history of producing spin bowlers, the only one in the top five on a list dominated by modern-day quicks is leg-spinner Subhash Gupte, who claimed 17 wickets in a five-match series in 1959.
Most wickets by an Indian bowler in an England Test series (player, season, matches, wickets, average, average runs per over):
2021/22 Jasprit Bumrah 5 21 21.09 2.60
Kumar, Bhuvneshwar 2014 5 19 26.63 2.92
Zaheer Khan 2007 3 18 20.33 2.68
Ishant Sharma 2018 5 18 24.27 2.89
Subhash Gupte (born 1959) 5 17 34.64 2.94
Bumrah's statistics are true as of the completion of England's first innings in the ongoing fifth Test at Edgbaston.
