England overcame Denmark 2-1 in extra time to reach their first European Championship final, and will face Italy for the trophy at Wembley Stadium in London.

With a hard-fought 2-1 extra-time triumph against Denmark in the second semi-final at Wembley Stadium in London on Thursday, England ended a 55-year drought to reach the Euro 2020 final. On July 12, England will meet Italy in their first European Championship final at the same location.

Both captains scored, with one scoring the game-winner and the other, much to Denmark’s dismay, finding the back of his own net.

In regular time, England and Denmark were tied at 1-1 after the visitors grabbed the lead in the 30th minute with a magnificent free-kick from midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard, but the hosts equalized in the 40th minute when Simon Kjr scored an own-goal while attempting to block a cross.

Damsgaard’s goal was the first in this edition to come from a direct free-kick, and it was also England’s first in Euro 2020. Kjaer’s own goal, on the other hand, was the first in European Championship history for England.

In the second half, no side scored, but both teams had several chances. In the 55th minute, England defender Harry Maguire’s header was clawed away by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. In the 59th minute, a shot by Denmark forward Kasper Dolberg was saved, but the score stayed level.

Raheem Sterling, England’s most consistent player in this tournament, delivered the crucial move for his team when he raced into the Danish box from the right-wing and managed to score.

In the 104th minute, captain Harry Kane stepped up, his initial shot blocked by Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, but he converted the rebound to secure the victory and tie Gary Lineker for the most goals in major competitions (Euro and World Cup).

Christian Eriksen was ruled out of the Euro 2020 tournament after having a heart attack in his team’s opener last month. England paid a moving homage to him on Wednesday night by giving him a signed shirt.

Just before their semi-final at Wembley Stadium in London, England captain Harry Kane presented his Danish rival Simon Kjaer with an autographed No. 10 shirts. Eriksen is presently recuperating in his Copenhagen home.
