Mirabai Chanu, an Indian weightlifter, earned a silver medal in the Weightlifting (49kg) division, giving India its first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu made history by becoming India’s first weightlifting silver medalist in the Olympics. Chanu won the gold medal in the 49kg weight class.

During the 49kg division final, the 26-year-old lifted 87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk to earn a total of 202, making Indian history.

Chanu has also started India’s medal account at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the silver medal.

Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal in the event, while Indonesia took home the bronze.

Chanu was seen as one of India’s best medal prospects at this year’s Olympics, and he was in excellent form in the run-up to the Games. In April of this year, she set the world record for Clean and Jerk in her division, lifting 119kg.

Zhihui of China set an Olympic record in the snatch event by lifting 94 kg in the final. She was in first place after snatch, and the Chinese also won the Clean and Jerk event, lifting 116 kg, another Olympic record.

Chanu was competing in his second Olympics. She had failed in her maiden snatch attempt of 82kg in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She was able to lift 82kg on her second effort before failing at 84kg on her third attempt. She also failed all three Clean and Jerk efforts.

The weightlifter, on the other hand, made up for it in her second appearance in Tokyo. Chanu was successful in her first and second snatch attempts at 84kg and 87kg, respectively, before failing at 89kg. She successfully lifted weights of 110kg and 115kg in the Clean and Jerk event.
